My name is Katherine Wald, and I am a Licensed Psychotherapist and Certified EMDR Therapist born and raised in Miami. I have returned to the warm weather after earning my bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University magna cum laude, and my Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania with honors. Over the fifteen years that I have been in practice, I have become a Certified Clinical Supervisor to other therapists, and have provided clients with a wide range of therapeutic approaches to aid in their healing process.
Although I work with many different types of clients, I specialize in the areas of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), family and relationship problems, physical/sexual/emotional abuse, Depression, Dissociative Disorders, and Anxiety Disorders.
My approach to therapy is very solution focused. When working with children I use therapeutic art and play techniques, as well as behavior modification to help them communicate feelings that they might not be able to express verbally. I often include parents/guardians in my sessions and develop a comprehensive behavior modification plan that is usable both at home and at school.
With adolescent and adult clients, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Psychodrama based experiential work. I also incorporate holistic approaches such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Meditation, and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). These methods help reduce symptom severity and effectively empower clients to take control over their emotions rather than to allow their emotions to control them.
I am also a Certified EMDR Therapist. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a comprehensive and integrative form of psychotherapy that enables clients to rapidly heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR has been declared an effective form of treatment for trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing memories, and post traumatic stress by various organizations including: The American Psychiatric Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs. For more information on EMDR, go to: www.emdria.org.
In addition to individual, couples, and family therapy, I also offer ADHD coaching. ADHD coaching helps those with attention and executive functioning deficits to compensate in the areas where there might be challenges. This includes learning how to manage time, organize, prioritize, regulate emotions, tolerate frustration, sustain attention, and study and work effectively. When coaching, I also work on anger management, impulse control, self-esteem, social skill building and other areas where people with attention deficits tend to struggle.
