Counseling Group Miami

Robert Blackgrove, Psy.D. | Director of Psychological Assessment

Hello. My name is Dr. Robert Blackgrove and I am a licensed psychologist living and practicing in Miami, Florida. Having resided all over the U.S. and overseas, I’ve developed an appreciation for a wide diversity of cultural backgrounds and ways of life. I have more than 20 years of mental health, assessment, and treatment experience, including individual, couples, and family therapy. I’m also experienced in working with a wide variety of disorders, emotional difficulties and relationship problems, including anxiety and depression. I also work with those who do not have significant problems, but would just like to enhance their functioning or quality of life.

I have 3 general areas of expertise, which include individual therapy/counseling, psychological assessment, and couples therapy/relationship counseling. As an individual therapist, I work to understand and connect with my clients of all ages. Using a variety of techniques and models of therapy (cognitive behavior therapy/ CBT, acceptance commitment therapy/ ACT, existential therapy, object relations, client-centered therapy, and others), client issues are more likely to be addressed in a ways that are likely to promote lasting change. Empirically validated techniques are discussed and utilized when appropriate. I use a blend of therapeutic strategies when working with children and adolescents, including the use of reality based techniques, humor, and play/games to help reach today’s youth. I treat clients with mood disorders (anxiety, depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder), personality disorders, and those who are coping with life changes and transitions. I also work with clients who are dealing with career issues and occupational stressors and challenges.

Through my experience working with patients suffering from various neurological, psychological, and orthopedic conditions, I have gained a familiarity and flexibility with psychological assessment tools. This helps to put clients at ease while providing them with meaningful and useful data. As a result, I’ve helped clients answer questions about their intellectual capacities, strengths, weaknesses, personality dynamics, coping styles, interpersonal style, career interests, and approaches toward relationships. I also provide adult, child, and adolescent assessments for IQ, gifted placement, psychoeducational testing, accommodations testing (school, SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, NBME, etc.), learning disabilities, learning disorders, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, mood evaluation, personality, diagnosis, treatment planning, and couples/relationship therapy enhancement. My past experiences have included being a psychological consultant for television and radio, and providing consultation services to businesses and corporations to assist with employee selection, advancement, and hiring decisions.

Additionally, I am a couple’s therapist, certified sex therapist, and have completed Levels 1 and 2 of the Gottman Couples Therapy training. Couples therapy and sex therapy are compatible treatment modalities that can be utilized in conjunction with one another to more fully address modern relationship issues. Treatment for erectile dysfunction, low sexual desire, premature ejaculation, and compulsive sexual behavior are but a few of the covered areas. I have helped many couples enhance their closeness, communication, conflict management skills, intimacy, and sense of satisfaction.

I am an active member of the American Psychological Association (APA), Florida Psychological Association (FPA), and Dade County Psychological Association (DCPA) and was an adjunct faculty member of Nova Southeastern University, providing supervision to doctoral students and residents. I currently work with The Counseling Group Miami full-time. I also provide executive coaching and consultation services for Florida International University’s Center for Leadership program.
